Bulldogs hold Demons goalless in first half and cruise to win ahead of finals

Monday, August 29, 2016 - 11:27 PM - by Chris Pike

THERE were no signs of complacency from South Fremantle despite having nothing at stake against Perth at Lathlain Park on Saturday with the Bulldogs kicking the only 10 goals of the first half to end up beating the Demons by 52 points.

The Bulldogs had locked in second position on the WAFL ladder no matter the result against the second last placed Demons so there was nothing at stake in terms of finishing positions.

But South Fremantle had already beaten Perth twice in 2016 by 98 points back at Lathlain Park in Round 5 and then by 38 points in Carnarvon in Round 20 on the back of 13 goals to three in the second half so the Bulldogs were full of confidence against the lowly Demons.

South Fremantle was on fire in the first quarter kicking eight goals to nil with Perth not even managing a behind. The Bulldogs then kicked another two goals to none in the second term to end up cruising to the 14.14 (98) to 7.4 (46) victory.

SOUTH Fremantle is one week out from a first finals appearance since 2011 but the Bulldogs still enter Saturday's clash with Perth at Lathlain Park wanting to perform strongly.

South Fremantle has scored two impressive wins over Perth already in 2016 and will be looking for a third to enter the finals full of confidence but the Demons will want to signal how far they have improved this year as well.

South Fremantle will be finishing in second position on the WAFL ladder no matter the result on Saturday with a qualifying final next Saturday against West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval locked away.

Wilson reaches 100 WAFL games but aims for century with Bulldogs

Thursday, August 25, 2016 - 3:01 PM - by Chris Pike

BLAYNE Wilson grew up wanting to play for South Fremantle and now he's got to do that the past two years as he reaches his 100th WAFL game this Saturday and sees no reason he won't end his career at the Bulldogs.

Having played his junior football at Halls Head and coming through the ranks at Peel Thunder, Wilson played his first 36 WAFL matches there while being picked up by the West Coast Eagles along the way.

The Eagles alignment with East Perth saw Wilson play his next 29 matches with the Royals where he took part in the losing grand finals of 2013 and 2014 while also playing nine AFL games for West Coast.

Coach Post Match – Todd Curley Round 22

Wednesday, August 24, 2016 - 6:03 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following Saturday's four-point victory over a desperate East Perth at Medibank Stadium and looking ahead to this Saturday's Round 23 match against Perth at Lathlain Park as preparations continue for the finals the following week.

QUESTION: Even though it got a bit tight there at the end, are you happy to come away with a victory against a team that needed to win and has plenty of finals experience?
ANSWER: We were pretty good for large portions of the game. Maybe being five in front halfway through the last quarter the intensity dropped off a little and they kicked a couple of quick ones, and some belief set in. But I thought we steadied OK and hung on pretty well so it's probably a pretty good tune up going forward.

Bulldogs prevail in finals tune up over desperate Royals

Tuesday, August 23, 2016 - 1:44 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle prevailed in an ideal finals tune up on Saturday overcome a desperate and hardened East Perth line-up by four points at Medibank Stadium with just one game now to go until a first finals appearance since 2011.

South Fremantle might have been locked in second position on the WAFL ladder no matter the result against East Perth on Saturday with the Royals potentially falling out of the finals hunt with a loss depending on other results, but the Bulldogs still threw everything into the contest.

The Bulldogs kicked away in the third quarter and early in the last to lead by as much as 32 points but the Royals didn’t give up and kicked four straight goals to set up a thrilling finish.

Round 22 Preview v East Perth

Friday, August 19, 2016 - 4:57 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle will look to continue its winning momentum and good form on Saturday ahead of the Bulldogs' return to the finals up against an East Perth team that needs to win at Medibank Stadium.

Finals for a fifth straight year could very well go on the line on Saturday for East Perth at Medibank Stadium with the Royals facing a tough ask against a South Fremantle team now locked away of finishing in second position.

East Perth looked set to take part in the finals again for a fifth straight year after winning five straight matches following a Round 18 victory over Claremont.

But the Royals have now lost the last two weeks against Peel Thunder and Subiaco to slip out of the top five.

Luff's hard work rewards Bulldogs' faith after slow start to 2016

Friday, August 19, 2016 - 3:59 PM - by Chris Pike

THE back-line has been a great strength of South Fremantle's right throughout 2016 and in recent weeks the return of Chris Luff has added to it further as the Bulldogs gear up for a return to the WAFL finals for the first time since 2011.

The decision to push career forward Josh Pullman down back for the Bulldogs in 2016 has proved a masterstroke and he has formed a strong defensive combination with Blayne Wilson, Marlion Pickett, Adam Guglielmana, Matthew Gundry, Jason Maskos and then before he went down injured, Adam McIntosh.

Perhaps the one area the Bulldogs were a little short in down back was another tall defender, though, to help out Pullman and to help free up Pickett and Wilson to not have to play on some of the real key position forwards of the opposition.

Bulldogs overcome plucky Swans to secure top two finish

Tuesday, August 16, 2016 - 12:26 AM

SOUTH Fremantle survived a scare against the bottom placed Swan Districts at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday but the Bulldogs kicked away late to win by 35 points and lock away a top two WAFL finish.

Despite a slow start with Swan Districts kicking the opening two goals in the Bulldogs' last home game of the regular season on Saturday, South Fremantle was on top of the contest for most of the afternoon.

But inaccurate kicking denied the Bulldogs the chance to put Swans away despite leading by as much as 37 points during the third quarter.

The black-and-whites never gave up and did close to within seven points early in the last term, but South Fremantle responded to kick the game's last four goals and win 14.21 (105) to 11.4 (70).

Round 21 Preview v Swan Districts

Friday, August 12, 2016 - 2:45 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle returns to Fremantle Community Bank Oval for the final home regular season game on Saturday to take on the wooden spoon bound Swan Districts ahead of the Bulldogs' first finals appearance since 2011.

South Fremantle beat Perth by 37 points after trailing by 31 just before half-time last Saturday in Carnarvon and that victory saw the Bulldogs lock away a top two finish with West Perth also losing to Subiaco.

But the Bulldogs could still finish on top of the ladder by winning their remaining three games against Swan Districts, East Perth and Perth, if Subiaco lose its last two also against East Perth and Peel Thunder.

That might remain an outside chance of happening, but South Fremantle will want to ensure being in top form of entering a first finals appearance in five years.
